The fifty boats registered for the Record SNSM 2012 were held hostage by a strike. The kick off of the eighth edition was to be launched this afternoon at 05:00 PM in St. Nazaire. It is a blow to all the volunteer rescuers, organizers and competitors who were happy to support this noble cause.
MOD70 N°05 Spindrift racing was to sail on a 360 miles race along Breton coasts but remained docked. The crew of the black and white trimaran was saddened by this news, an important cause close to their hearts. It also prevented them from confronting themselves with the three other MOD70s prior to the Krys Ocean Race (starting July 7th from New York with an estimated arrival in Brest on July 13th).
“We are obviously disappointed not to compete in the eighth edition of this legendary event. The work accomplished all year round by the volunteer rescuers, and at times during harsh climatic conditions, is exceptional. However the only positive thing to retain from this, is that we had prepared the trimaran in race configuration and although it was cancelled, we were ready. The boat could leave for New York tonight if it had to! ” Léo Lucet, director and sailing crew aboard Spindrift racing, confided.
The Spindrift team joins Yann Guichard to express their regrets and sincere thanks to all the rescuers at sea and the organizers of this wonderful competition.
