A podium finish for Yann Guichard in his first World Match Racing Tour event

At the end of a spectacular windy week in Fremantle, Australia, Yann Guichard and his crew produced a remarkable performance in their first event of the World Match Racing Tour, finishing third out of twenty teams. Supported by Christophe Espagnon, François Morvan and Sébastien Marsset, the Spindrift racing skipper was in excellent form at the helm of the M32 catamaran, showing all his experience in multihull regattas against seasoned match racers.

On an ocean with crested waves, under the scorching Australian sun, elite international sailors navigated their way around technical, highly athletic courses just a few dozen metres away from the shoreline. Completing one stage after another was a test of mental and physical strength. After the heats, raced as fleets, Yann and his crew were able to maintain the intense pace of the knock-out stages, beating Keith Swinton (AUS) by 3.5 points to 1 in the round of 16 and Murray Jones (AUS) by 3 points to 1 in the quarter-finals. In the semi-finals, Spindrift racing's men lost to the outfit led by Hans Wallén. The Swede was beaten by world number 1 Ian Williams (GBR) in the final. Yann won the "petit final" 2-1 against Denmark's Danish Nicolai Sehested, taking the third step of the podium in Australia.

Spindrift racing skipper Yann Guichard: "We've finished third in our first event on the World Match Racing Tour. We're pleased to have reached the last four and to have won the petit final. It's very encouraging. I've been competing in multihull regattas for over 20 years, which is very helpful, but we're no experts in match racing. The boat is new for my team and for me, and so is the format, with very short, intense races. It's very physical for the crew. We made some mistakes, especially during the start phases. Now, we need to improve in the duels and in our manoeuvres. We'll have a chance to train some more between now and the next stage in Copenhagen (Denmark - May 9th-14th). We're delighted to be part of this highly competitive international circuit, and we'll work hard to be on top form at the World Match Racing Championship Finals in Marstrand, Sweden in July."
