Tough first night at sea for Spindrift 2
  • Maxi Spindrift 2
November 3, 2014

It was a restless first night at sea for those competing in the 10th Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe. Strong winds blew off the coast of Brittany at speeds of 30 knots, with gusts of up to 40 knots. A raging sea wreaked havoc among the 91 sailors who left Saint-Malo yesterday, causing several incidents among the various classes.

Sodebo Ultim’ was the main casualty, colliding with a cargo ship. Competitive since the start, Spindrift 2 and Yann Guichard are keeping up with the pace and have left the English Channel with the rest of the Ultimate class, travelling at speeds of between 14 and 20 knots.

As they leave the Channel, the wind speeds are unstable and some maxi-trimarans are travelling much quicker than others. Spindrift 2 sits just ahead of Idec Sport, hot on the heels of Paprec Recycling, and is likely to encounter even tougher conditions as she enters the Atlantic and the dreaded Bay of Biscay.
