Yann Guichard and his crew have won the first stage of the World Match Racing Tour 2018, in Marstrand Sweden. This is a first victory on the circuit for Spindrift racing, who have only raced on the circuit for the past three seasons.
This win demonstrates an increase in form, which was further underlined in the final race of the day against the British skipper and six-time world champion, Ian Williams. The French team secured victory by just a metre, winning the event overall with a scoreline of 3/2 to Guichard. This completed a perfect week of competition for the team: a successful passage through the qualifiers and well-managed match races, saw them earn their place in the quarter finals without losing a single race, underlining the strong team work and great team ethic. There were many encouraging signs for the following WMRT stages, but the main goal still remains the World Championship in China in the autumn.
Yann Guichard : "We had a fantastic week. Everything came together for a great event in Marstrand: ideal sailing conditions, tactical race area, good competition, enthusiastic crowds and a very motivated crew. Since we first joined the World Match Racing Tour we have never stopped progressing. This first win is an important step in our game. It is especially encouraging as we have just welcomed Matthieu to the team and he has had found his place quickly, despite not having trained with us before! We have a good rhythm and coordination and are moving the boat well. This result is very positive for the entire team.”
