Founded in 2011 by Dona Bertarelli and Yann Guichard from a shared passion for the sea, sailing and competition, Spindrift racing has today developed into the team of reference in professional sailing.
As the team celebrates its fifth anniversary, over the next few months we will be delving into the archives to relive and share some of the key moments that have helped to evolve Spindrift racing into a business that strives to achieve the highest levels of excellence, be they sporting, technical, human and also in terms of sharing their endeavours.
Based since 2011 in Saint Philibert on the shores of the Gulf of Morbihan, Spindrift racing set itself an ambitious programme inspired by the desire to share a passion for human and sporting adventure, fuelled by an entrepreneurial approach promoting excellence and the quest for performance at the highest level.
The Spindrift racing story begins with the acquisition of a MOD70, a 21m trimaran. Skippered by Yann Guichard, the team achieved its first victories be that in the Krys Ocean Race, or the 2012 Multi One Championship. That same year a 35-foot catamaran once more came back into the team, skippered by Dona Bertarelli who had been competing on the Swiss circuit with an all-female team since 2007. Ladycat powered by Spindrift racing continued its progress and, at the close of the 2012 season, found itself on the podium for the first time. Today, the catamaran counts three victories in the prestigious Bol d’Or Mirabaud amongst its many accomplishments.
As the years pass the identity of the team grows and, with its black and gold livery, establishes its DNA and finds its rightful place in the international sailing arena. Moving between offshore and inshore racing in 2013 Spindrift racing brings Spindrift 2, the world’s largest ocean racing trimaran, into its fold. More recently the team joined the M32 match-racing circuit further underlining the team's position in the world of competitive sailing and, in particular, international multihull competition.
Continuing to develop the team’s desire to remain at the forefront of technology through its investment in research and innovation, the team regularly optimises and improves Spindrift 2, while also opening itself to new circuits such as the innovative foiling GC32 class.
Whether through competitions or records, the Spindrift racing’s founders continue begin to build a strong team around them – both that on water or on land - and continue to support sports projects and manage the day-to-day activities. The growth of Spindrift racing is carefully nurtured and the founders and their expert team continue to innovate and while also encouraging young talented. Some thirty people now form the heart of the Brittany-based team and through them the story of Spindrift racing continues to unfold.
