Genève-Rolle-Genève and Open de Versoix: double 6th for Ladycat

Ladycat powered by Spindrift racing finished sixth in both grand prix in the Decision 35 championship this weekend. The fourth regatta of the season ended today (Monday) without any racing due to a lack of wind. On Sunday, in the Open de Versoix, the competitors were on ‘banana-shaped’ windward-leeward courses and Spindrift finished the day in sixth place. On Saturday, in the third regatta of the season, the 11 one-designs took part in their first long-distance race of 2014, the Genève-Rolle-Genève, also finishing sixth.

There was not much wind on Saturday either when the D35 left Geneva on the long-distance race to Rolle for the 50th edition of the Genève-Rolle-Genève. The wind picked up slowly for the return to Geneva and there were decent gennaker conditions, which allowed Ladycat to work its way back up the field. “We made a bad start and were behind the entire fleet with no chance of overtaking,”Yann Guichard, the skipper of Ladycat, said. “Fortunately, the wind picked up for the return to Rolle and we got back a few places to finish sixth.”

On Sunday, for the first day of the Open de Versoix, there was 6-10 knots of north-easterly breeze on the water, and the D35s were able to contest all six scheduled races. “It was a tough day,” Guichard said. “We couldn’t find any inspiration and made some errors of judgment that cost us a lot of points. We also struggled to find consistent speed. The reasons: certainly a lack of training having arrived in Switzerland on the eve of the Genève-Rolle-Genève and the accumulated fatigue from the eight days of delivering Spindrift 2 to Newport. I particularly noticed that there is very little difference between first six boats and every error is very costly.”

This weekend has been good training for the legendary Bol d'Or Mirabaud, which takes place next Saturday. “That’s an important goal for the season and one that all the team look forward to every year. Dona (Bertarelli) will be returning at the helm of Ladycat.”
