The maxi trimaran Spindrift 2 arrived in Brittany this morning after its long journey by cargo ship from Fremantle, Australia after her retirement from the Jules Verne Trophy attempt, following a major technical failure of the starboard rudder on 1st February 2019. The team had to carefully sail the trimaran to closest landfall, the western Australian coast, and then began the process of organising the repatriation of the world’s largest racing trimaran.

With the boat now back in home waters, the team will be analysing the circumstances around the structural failure, so as to ensure the best preparation for any future attempt especially as at the time of the abandonment, Yann Guichard’s team was making good progress against the existing round the world record.

While legendary Spindrift 2 remains at the heart of Spindrift racing's sporting ambitions, the team will also be continuing its 2019 season in the demanding World Match Racing Tour world circuit, after qualifying for the fourth consecutive year.

The first event in the M32 World Championship will take place against the stunning scenery of Lake Garda. The team’s black and gold catamaran, Ladycat will again be racing on the waters of Lake Geneva competing in the bicentenary of the famous Bol d'Or Mirabaud. Through the Spindrift for Schools programme, Dona and Yann will continue to share their passion for sailing and love of the oceans with younger generations and continue to act to support the protection of the oceans through this educational programme. The sports programme for the second half of the 2019 season, will be announced in due course.

"I am happy to see Spindrift 2 return home. Even though we are still disappointed at stopping our record attempt, there are very many positive elements that we can take away with us: the crew was perfect, and I don’t believe that we have ever had such good teamwork, which was incredibly satisfying; Spindrift 2 is much faster than it was three years ago, the development and optimisations that we made worked really well and I hope that we will be able to get back to this level of high performance quickly.

Tn terms of our other sailing activities we are keeping continuity with the M32 programme, an event that we started competing in a few years ago. We have set the bar a little higher for ourselves this year and we will be competing in the circuit with the core team and taking part in the 2018 WMRT finale in Marstrand in July. We will then finish the M32 season at the World Championships, which will allow us, again, to compete against some of the best sailors on the water at the moment," comments Yann Guichard.

Spindrift racing is also pleased to announce the arrival of Adam Currier, the expert multihull sailor and technician, as Spindrift 2's Boat Captain and head of the technical team. While David Salle and Sébastien Soupey also join the team in the technical unit and performance analysis, respectively.
